8 Year Old Mikey*
*Mikey’s name and any details about him have been anonymised for privacy reasons.
-
Mikey is autistic. He joined Right to Learn seeking some assistance with literacy and numeracy.
-
Part of the initial stages of our specialised tutoring service is to conduct standardised testing and assessments to gain an understanding of where they are at. This testing includes One Minute Maths (OMM), LeST and Burt Wording Reading tests. Right to Learn uses evidence and data to discern the best way forward for students. We believe this personalised approach best serves the unique requirements of our students, and the results are also easily discernible when further testing is conducted at the later stages of the tutoring process.
Mikey’s initial results indicated a numeracy score (addition and subtraction) of 7 years of age, slightly behind what might be expected of an 8 year old boy. In terms of literacy, Mikey’s reading age was just over the age of 6, and he was shown to be in the approximately the bottom 13% percentile for readers of his age.
-
This data informed the best way forward. At Right to Learn, part of the process involves our team creating an individual learning plan for each student, with targeted (achievable) goals. The tutoring sessions therefore focussed on the following:
Developing grapheme-phonic relationship skills with a Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) approach;
‘I do, we do, you do’ approach to develop number facts;
Repetition until the targeted skill is mastered;
A gamified and fun approach to learning.
The approach was tailored specifically to Mikey, giving him targeted, one-to-one support in areas he might not have been able to receive in a mainstream classroom.
-
After three months of weekly tutoring, Mikey showed significant improvements in both literacy and numeracy. His addition and subtraction age both increased to 8 years (a growth of 1 year in 3 months) whilst his reading age increased to 7 years (also an increase of 1 year in 3 months). Testing revealed Mikey was now in the 51st percentile of boys his age, placing him at approximately the middle of the pack, an increase of approximately 38% in 3 months.
Anecdotally, Mikey also appears far more confident with his reading and numeracy, and by all accounts is finding his schooling a far more rewarding experience.
Right to Learn aims to improve the capacity of students with disability, learning difficulties and whom are neurodiverse. The purpose of this is to build a foundation of reading, numeracy and study skills with the goal of improving their life at school, home and the community.
We are very proud of Mikey, and can’t wait to continue to help him reach his goals.
7 Year Old Remy*
*Remy’s name and any details about her have been anonymised for privacy reasons.
-
Remy has ADHD. She joined Right to Learn around 6 months ago to get some help in numeracy.
-
When Remy started at R2L she underwent a numeracy assessment to provide us with an indication of where she was in terms of her addition, subtraction and multiplication. Those assessments revealed that Remy:
Scored at about her age in addition; and
Scored at about the age of a 6 year old in terms of both subtraction and multiplication (about one year behind where she might be expected to be)
-
With Remy, we really focused on repetition and recall, the use of worked examples and an “I do, we do, you do” approach until the specific skills were mastered. Remy made great progress over the 6-month period. She worked really hard, and we could see that her confidence grew every single week. A further assessment took place to see what direction the future tutoring sessions should take, but also provide some insights to Remy’s parents.
-
After 6 months, Remy scored:
At age 9 in terms of both addition and subtraction (about 2 years ahead of where she might be expected to be);
At age 8 in terms of multiplication (one year ahead).
Remy improved her addition and multiplication by a factor of 2 years. In terms of subtraction, she went from scoring at an approximate age of 6 years old to that of a 9 year old student, representing a 3 years of growth in only 6 months.
Most notably, Remy is far more engaged, takes more learning risks (her perception of failure has changed), she appears more curious, she has developed independence and resilience and takes more initiative with her learning. She has grown in terms of her maths skills, but also those foundational aspects of learning that will help her educational journey for many years to go.
R2L is not just about helping kids get better at maths; it’s about helping grow their confidence, enjoy learning and develop skills and habits to brighten their future.
Great work Remy!
