Right to Learn’s Evidenced-Based Systematic Synthetic Phonics Approach

At Right to Learn, we incorporate systematic synthetic phonics as a key strategy in our literacy tutoring program. By explicitly teaching the relationship between phonemes and graphemes, we help students segment words into sounds and blend these sounds into words. Our lessons are tailored to each student's reading level, determined through diagnostic assessments and ongoing observations. We typically start with simple phoneme-grapheme relationships and progress to more complex ones over time. To strengthen our students' reading abilities, we use decodable texts.

The Evidence

Numerous research reports over the decades support the use of systematic synthetic phonics. Most recently, the 2024 Grattan Institute’s report on reading emphasizes the efficiency of teaching all students how to decode from the outset. This approach is beneficial even for students who might naturally pick up decoding skills, as it ensures no child is left behind and reduces the need for intensive intervention later.

The report also debunks the myth that phonics alone is insufficient for developing reading skills. It highlights that a structured literacy approach, which includes phonics, provides numerous opportunities for students to engage with rich, authentic texts, fostering both decoding and comprehension skills.

Additionally, the report outlines England's 16 core criteria for validating systematic synthetic phonics programs. These criteria include starting phonics education early, progressing systematically from simple to complex phonics, and ensuring daily teaching sessions. This structured approach is designed to meet or exceed expected reading standards by the end of stage 1.

Finally, the Grattan Institute’s report argues that focusing on foundational decoding skills early on leads to greater reading enjoyment. Strong early reading skills correlate with a higher likelihood of developing a lifelong love of reading.
